Home Care near Scotch Plains, NJ – Solutions for Incontinence

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common problem among adults and particularly the elderly. There are a number of different types of urinary incontinence including the following:

  • Mixed: This typically happens due to either an illness or any damage previously occurring to the bladder.
  • Stress: This type is very common in women. If a person puts any stress on their stomach wall (bladder area) they can experience leakage of urine. Many times laughing, coughing or sneezing can trigger stress incontinence.
  • Urge: A person may feel a very strong urge to use the restroom but the urine will leak out before they can make it to the restroom in time. This is a very common problem with senior citizens.
  • Overflow: People with weak bladders can suffer overflow UI. When a person uses the restroom, they are unable to completely empty their bladder thus causing an overflow and allowing the leakage of urine.
  • Functional: A person who has mobility problems may have difficulty getting to the restroom in time because they are physically unable to do so. Or, if a person has dementia, they may forget where the bathroom is and not get to it in time.

Fortunately for seniors and others who suffer from this issue, it is treatable. Check with your doctor for treatment options. However, here are some common solutions:

  • Surgery: This is probably the most extreme form of treatment and is only used in very severe cases. To help give the person better bladder control, a doctor will make adjustments to the bladder as well as the pelvic muscle.
  • Medications: There are several medications on the market to treat UI.
  • Kegal exercises: These exercises can help women strengthen their pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic floor muscles support the rectum, small intestine, uterus and bladder.
  • Botox injections: Researchers have discovered Botox can be used for more than just getting rid of wrinkles. It can be beneficial in reducing incontinence, particularly mixed incontinence which is due to an illness.
  • Training your bladder: A person can train themselves to use the restroom at set times during the day on a regular basis.
