There is a lot of talk about getting exercise and getting in shape for 2015.  Making time for more exercise, losing weight, and eating healthier are the most popular New Year’s resolutions throughout the United States.

But what about for people who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease? Is it okay for them to get exercise?

When you’re talking about Alzheimer’s care, regardless of the stage, exercise can be incredibly beneficial. However, there are limits for those with Alzheimer’s, or some other form of dementia, that may be different than the limits for other individuals.

Pay attention to how the patient is feeling on any given day.  As the disease progresses, the Alzheimer’s patient is going to experience moments of confusion, memory loss, and potentially even anger, anxiety, and outbursts.  Trying to get someone in this state of mind to exercise, especially if he or she is not inclined to do so, can cause even more stress and anxiety. If the Alzheimer’s patient is not having a good day, is having difficulty focusing, following directions, or has other issues, it may be best to put off the exercise for that specific day.

Keep the Alzheimer’s patient from over exerting himself or herself with exercise.  Sometimes when people exercise, they may go a bit overboard with their routine. This can include those who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.  The Alzheimer’s patient may be in relatively good physical health and feel great and energized. However, he may also overestimate his ability to do certain exercises, particularly with lifting weights or working out with a machine.  It is crucial to know the limits of each individual and avoid pushing him or her too far.

An experienced Alzheimer’s care provider will be able to quickly and easily assess any situation, especially if they have been working with the patient for an extended period of time.  If you or an aging loved one are considering hiring caregiver services near Rahway NJ, call the caring staff at Helping Hands Home Care today at (908-418-4299).
