How to Help Your Elderly Loved One Reduce the Risk of Contracting Coronavirus

April 9, 2020 by Robert D'Arienzo

According to the CDC, those with pre-existing medical conditions are at a higher risk of getting sick from the coronavirus. Does your elderly loved one have pre-existing medical conditions? Are you worried that your elderly loved one will contract the coronavirus?

Home Care Services in Mountainside NJ: Keeping Senior Safe From Coronavirus

This is a concern that many family members have for their elderly loved ones. However, it is important to know that there are some things you can do to help your elderly loved one reduce their risk of contracting coronavirus.

Social Distancing

One of the ways that you can help your elderly loved one to reduce their risk of contracting the coronavirus is through social distancing. Your loved one should do everything they can to keep their distance from other people. Even if they have elder care providers, trying to keep the distance between each other can help to lower the risk of getting coronavirus. Limiting close contact can prevent the spread of this disease.

Avoid Sick People

You should also make sure your elderly loved one avoid sick people. For instance, if the elder care provider that comes to their home on the weekends is sick, request another care provider to come to stay with your loved one instead. This will keep your loved one safer during this pandemic.

Washing Hands Often

You should be reminding your elderly loved one that they should be washing their hands often, as well. Anytime they come in contact with someone, they should wash their hands. They should also practice handwashing throughout the day (before and after going to the bathroom, before and after eating, etc.). Sanitizing with a product that is a minimum of 60% alcohol would be effective, too.

Avoiding Crowds

Your elderly loved one should also be avoiding crowds. For instance, if your elderly loved one needs groceries, you or someone who doesn’t have a pre-existing medical condition could go get their groceries for them. You could then leave these groceries on their front steps and have them or their elder care provider bring them inside.

These are some of the ways that you can help your elderly loved one to reduce the risk of contracting coronavirus. While it may take some getting used to for you and your elderly loved one, these tips can help to keep everyone safe. If your elderly loved one is having trouble with something during this pandemic, talk to them about it and see what solution you can come up with.
