What Should You Consider When Preparing for the Upcoming Winter Season? Learn the Basics.

Winter, Cold, and Snow … Oh My: Planning for the Season Ahead with Home Care Services in Clark NJ

“One Senior Man’s Suggestions on getting ready for Winter Season near Clark, NJ”

The first year that I spent in New Jersey, I have to say that it was quite a surprise for me. I was a southern raised person who had only seen snow on television programs, especially the Christmas specials that played every year when I was growing up. I had a job opportunity and decided to move to this area. Let me just say, that first winter was a bit more than just a shock to the system. It was devastating.

As I got older, I got more used to the cold weather. I guess what people say is true: your body begins to adapt to your environment and it really doesn’t take that long. Still, the cold can get to me every single year. However, I ended up getting married to a wonderful woman here, we had three children, raised them, and built a strong network of friends and family through the area.

Now that I require home care services, and my wife has long since passed away, winter seems to drag on much longer than I remember it doing when I was younger and it also requires more planning on my part. I sat down with the in-home care provider that I’ve been working with for more than three months to talk about preparing for this upcoming winter season ahead. We talked about several things that we both needed to do to get the house, and myself, ready for the winter that would bring the cold and, of course, snow.

1. Hiring somebody to shovel snow.

Up until last year, I was using a snow blower and taking care of my driveway and walkways myself. I simply can’t do that anymore. I needed to find somebody to do this for me. I ended up hiring a neighborhood kid who got permission from his parents to use a snow blower and would be here every day that is snowed.

2. Putting up plastic on the windows.

Even though my wife had insisted that we get energy efficient windows five years ago, I still have a habit of putting up plastic over the windows. This helps to keep the house warm and saves me a lot of money.

3. Getting rock salt.

I usually have a pretty good stash of rock salt throughout the year. I stock up on it at the end of one winter season because I know the next winter the prices could be much higher. This year I was right. Fortunately, I have more than enough to last the entire season. That rock salt is going to come in handy to keep the walkways from being too slick.

These are just a few things that I have done with the home care services provider to help plan for this upcoming winter season. I would recommend that everyone, regardless of whether they rely on an in-home care provider or not, to take similar measures. After all, coping with a long, hard winter is more about being mentally prepared for it than whatever Mother Nature throws our way.
